What is Binary to Hex ?

Binary and hexadecimal are two ways of writing the same integer. Binary uses two digits,0 and 1; hexadecimal uses sixteen symbols,0 through 9 followed byA throughF. This calculator rewrites a binary integer in hexadecimal and displays letters in uppercase.

Hexadecimal is compact because one hex digit corresponds exactly to four binary bits. That relationship allows you to check a conversion by grouping bits, without passing through a long decimal number. The numerical value remains unchanged even though the written representation becomes shorter.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the binary digits in the Binary Number field, then calculate. Use only 0 and 1 for a nonnegative integer. Do not include a 0 b prefix, spaces between groups, punctuation or a decimal point. The intended input is a sequence of bits, not a decimal number that happens to contain other digits.

Read the returned hexadecimal string. LettersA,B,C,D,E andF represent decimal values ten through fifteen. The page uses uppercase; lowercase letters in another tool normally represent the same hex digits.

For long strings, check the result with four-bit grouping. The backend uses PHP base_convert, whose documentation cautions about precision for large numbers. This implementation therefore should not be assumed to preserve every bit of an arbitrarily long identifier or cryptographic integer.

Formula Used

Binary value = Σ(bit at position i ×2^i), counting i from 0 at the right. Each group of 4 binary digits maps to 1 hexadecimal digit because 16=2⁴. Hex digitsA–F represent 10–15.

Variables Explained

InputUnit or choiceMeaning
Binary NumberBits 0 and 1Nonnegative integer representation; no spaces or prefixes.

Binary Number is a positional integer string. The rightmost bit contributes 1, the next 2, then 4,8,16 and so on. A zero bit contributes nothing at that position but still determines the positions of the bits to its left.

The hex output uses positions worth 1,16,256,4096 and higher powers of sixteen. For example,2 A represents 2×16 +10 =42 in decimal. Reading 2 A as a decimal number is not meaningful becauseA is a base-sixteen digit.

Leading zeros do not change the integer value, although they may indicate a fixed bit width in a protocol or register. The calculator returns an ordinary integer representation and does not promise to retain a chosen number of characters. Save the intended width separately if it matters.

Worked Example

For 101010₂, group from the right as 10|1010. Pad the left group with zeros for checking:0010|1010. The groups are 2 andA, so the hexadecimal result is 2 A. In decimal,32+8+2=42, matching 2×16+10.

For 11111111₂, group 1111|1111. Each group represents fifteen, writtenF, so the result isFF. Its decimal value is 15×16+15=255. A binary byte containing eight bits therefore fits in two hex digits.

For 100000000₂, group 1|0000|0000, yielding 100₁₆. The value is 256, not one hundred. Adding leading binary zeros, such as 000100000000, does not change that value, although the string may have a different intended field width.

Why Use This Calculator?

Use hexadecimal to inspect bit patterns more compactly. Keeping groups aligned makes it easier to compare bytes or identify changed positions. A change in one hex digit corresponds to a change within its four-bit group, rather than a change in an unrelated decimal grouping.

The calculator does not assign a signed interpretation. A bit pattern such as 11111111 can represent the unsigned integer 255, or a different value under a signed encoding such as eight-bit two’s complement. This page’s ordinary base conversion gives the unsigned positional value rather than deciding the encoding for you.

Byte order is another separate matter. A whole integer’s base conversion does not establish how bytes are arranged in a file or memory representation. If a protocol uses little-endian order, that convention must be handled separately from the digit conversion.

7

Common Mistakes

Do not enter decimal 42 to ask for its binary-to-hex conversion;4 and 2 are not binary digits. Do not group bits from the left without first aligning the final groups to the right. If the count is not a multiple of four, pad only the leftmost integer group for manual checking.

Avoid relying on permissive input handling. The controller only requires a nonempty field and does not enforce a binary-digit pattern, so a returned answer is not proof that an invalid input was accepted meaningfully. Validate the original bits yourself, especially for copied technical data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do leading zeros change the answer?

They do not change the integer value. They can still carry width information, such as a sixteen-bit field. The conversion does not preserve that metadata, so pad the result separately if a specification requires fixed width.

Why is 1010 writtenA?

The binary group 1010 has value 8+2=10. Hexadecimal usesA for ten so each digit remains a single symbol. B throughF continue with values eleven through fifteen.

Can I convert a binary fraction?

This page is intended for integer conversion through base_convert. A binary fraction such as 0.101 requires a fractional-place calculation and should not be entered as though the decimal point were an ordinary bit.

DoesFF always mean−1?

No. As an unsigned hexadecimal integer,FF is 255. It represents−1 only under a specified signed encoding and width, such as eight-bit two’s complement. The page does not choose that interpretation.

Is a very long bit string safe to convert here?

PHP documents precision limits for base_convert with large numbers. Check long exact values with an arbitrary-precision or direct bit-grouping method. Do not assume every last bit is preserved merely because an output appears.
